HypnoBirthing is an internationally recognized program that has been used by families of all types for the past 30 years. It teaches you to release fear and to trust your body’s instinctive ability to birth through the use of self-hypnosis, special breathing, and visualization techniques. HypnoBirthing is a complete childbirth education program, designed for you and your birth partner/companion to learn how to experience birth as both an art and joyful transformative life event. You will learn how to connect with your body’s own natural mechanisms to lessen, reduce or even eliminate discomfort during birth which decreases the bodies need for pain medication.
HypnoBirthing allows you to be better prepared to have a calm, peaceful, and positive birth experience, regardless of the type of birth you plan. HypnoBirthing works in all settings from home birth to hospital birth. Those who take a HypnoBirthing class report less fear as birth approaches, less need for interventions and surgical birth procedures, shorter labors, fewer pre-term and low-weight babies, reduced rates of epidural use, less tearing, and fewer cases of postpartum depression after birth.

When should I start classes?
Anytime after your first trimester! The course is designed for pregnancy, labor, birthing, as well as provides you with valuable tools for the rest of your life. The latest you’d want to start a series is 33 weeks since it’s a 5-week course, however it is recommended that you have at least 6-8 weeks from the end of the class to practice the material.
Does my partner need to attend? What if I don’t have a partner?
ALL types of families, couples, partners, or companions are welcome in class! Having the pregnant individual accompanied by whomever will be attending the birth is encouraged, but not required. The class is just as much for the accompanying person as it is for the birthing person, as it will make a significant impact on their confidence in supporting your labor and birth. If a partner can only attend a few classes, that is better than nothing, and the first class is especially important. No partner? No problem, feel free to bring any other support person such as family, friend, doula, etc.
Can I use HypnoBirthing if I am planning or need a medicated birth or cesarean?
YES!! The tools learned in the class allow you to stay calm and focused before receiving any planned medications. It allows you to stay calm and relaxed so you can feel confident about any decisions you may need to make in the moment if there is a need for unplanned medication. The daily relaxation practice you will learn to do each day prior to birth will help baby be happier and healthier, regardless of how their birth story unfolds. HypnoBirthing also provides you with a set of life skills, the tools and techniques will continue to be useful throughout your parenthood journey!
Will I experience pain during birth if I use Hypnobirthing?
Guarantees about the way you experience your birth cannot be made by anyone, including how much or little pain you experience. You will learn in class what creates the circumstances for experiencing “pain” during labor and birth and be taught skills that can help you counteract these circumstances. HypnoBirthing classes have been proven to greatly REDUCE the amount the pain experienced, as well as change the way you perceive pain in labor. Students of HypnoBirthing report using an epidural to manage pain at a rate of only 23%, compared to the national average of 71% of non-HypnoBirths.
Do I need to take or attend the hospital or other antenatal classes?
Some parents choose to take the prenatal courses offered at their birthing place, in addition to HypnoBirthing. It is totally up to you and your choice. However, HypnoBirthing – The Mongan Method is a complete and comprehensive childbirth education program designed to provide you with the best possible education and preparation. While hospital classes can vary in what is taught, it is reported that the focus is more on the medical aspects and what to expect from active management of labor and birth. It is recommended that you inquire about the classes and decided if it is something you would also like to learn. It is always encouraged for you to take a tour of the hospital or birth center you plan on birthing at, as to get a feel for where you will be bring baby into the world to make sure you feel as comfortable as possible.
